Vuelta a Espana: Chris Froome extends lead as Lopez wins stage 11

Britain's Chris Froome extended his lead in the Vuelta a Espana as Colombia's Miguel Angel Lopez claimed a solo victory on stage 11. Team Sky's Froome was second on the mountainous stage which finished in the Sierra Nevada in Andalucia. The four-time Tour de France winner was 14 seconds behind Lopez and now leads the race by one minute and 19 seconds. Italy's Vincenzo Nibali was beaten to the line by Froome, but moved up to second in the general classification. Former winner Nibali accelerated on the final climb of the 187.5km stage, but Froome - bidding to become the first British winner of the third of cycling's three grand tours - bridged the gap. Astana rider Lopez surged with 2km to go and Froome was content to allow him to push on for the stage win. Orica-Scott rider Esteban Chaves had started the stage in second, 36 seconds behind Froome, but the Colombian finished 17th, losing more than two minutes on the day to slip to third. If Froome wins,

Houston flood: 'No way to prevent' chemical plant blast or fire

A chemical plant near the flooded city of Houston is expected to explode or catch fire in the coming days. During heavy rainfall from Hurricane Harvey, the Arkema plant at Crosby lost refrigeration of chemical compounds which need to be kept cool, and there is no way to prevent a possible fire, the company said. At least 33 people have been killed in the aftermath of the storm. US energy supplies have also been hit, as oil companies shut down pipelines. The US National Weather Service downgraded the former hurricane to a tropical depression but has forecast continuing heavy rainfall over eastern Texas and western Louisiana. What happened at the chemical plant? The Arkema chemical plant shut down its production on Friday, before the storm made landfall. But 40in (102cm) of rainfall in the area flooded the site and cut off its power, the company said in a statement. Backup generators were also flooded. North Korea: US 'never out of diplomatic solutions'

Image
US Defence Secretary James Mattis has said the US is "never out of diplomatic solutions" in dealing with North Korea. It comes after President Donald Trump tweeted that "talking is not the answer" to the country's military ambitions. Russia has also warned the US against taking military action, saying it would be "fraught with unpredictable consequences". North Korea caused alarm by firing a missile over Japan on Tuesday. The missile, which Japan called an "unprecedented" threat, crossed the northern Hokkaido region early on Tuesday, triggering public alerts to take cover, before landing in the sea about 1,180km (730 miles) off the coast. North Korea later said it was  "the first step" of wider military operations  in the Pacific, and repeated its threats to the US Pacific island of Guam.
